Since 2023, alongside our wider Skills for Londoners project, we have run
a dedicated parenting strand for isolated mothers of children aged 0–5, supporting in
the order of 200 families to date.
Our approach
Mothers attend twice-weekly sessions with their children, learning to use simple
digital tools to build dual-language storybooks and early-language resources in
English and their home language. Sessions also build mothers' confidence
navigating school-readiness platforms, and weave in digital and financial confidence-building, safe device use, banking, and accessing entitlements - to reduce a key source of household stress affecting family stability.
Of the approximately 70 families who attend across the year, around half become
regular attenders, returning consistently over several weeks; the remainder engage on a lighter-touch, drop-in basis.
We work in partnership with Uplift Ventures, recently funded by the Newham NHS
Health Inequality Fund, to support families' wider health and wellbeing alongside our digital and early-learning sessions.
A family's story
One mother, isolated by language barriers and a long nursery waitlist for her three-year-old, joined our parent-only digital skills sessions, bringing her child with her.
Over eight weeks, she learned to use translation tools and dual-language resources, and began applying these skills directly with her child - searching out interactive phonics games instead of passive videos, reading English stories aloud while translating key words into their home language, and independently setting up her child's nursery communication app using its built-in translation feature.
By the end of the cohort, our staff observed a clear shift in the child: from brief,
passive attention during shared reading to sustained, active participation, including early mimicking of two-word phrases in both languages, alongside a new ability to settle into structured routines.
Who we work with
We are based in Manor Park, Newham (E12 5JF), within the Little Ilford ward,
ranked National IMD Decile 1 - among the most deprived 10% of neighbourhoods
in England (Index of Multiple Deprivation). Newham is one of the most deprived
boroughs in London on key measures of asset and household poverty (Trust for
London).
London-wide research by the Mayor's Workforce Integration Network found that
48.1% of Bangladeshi and Pakistani women in London were economically inactive in 2022, with unemployment levels more than three times higher than men from the same communities.
The research identifies lack of childcare and limited digital skills as two of the key barriers these women face - both directly addressed by our "Stay & Play" model, which allows mothers and children to attend together while building digital confidence side by side.
The families we support are predominantly Pakistani and other South Asian and
migrant families facing language barriers, isolation, and acute deprivation. Our 23
multilingual Digital Champions, speaking over nine community languages, many with lived experience matching the families we serve, are central to how we build trust and deliver this work.
